A psychologist education is a prerequisite in order to become a psychologist, and the criteria that you will need to meet vary by state. In order to get your education completed from an accredited institution of higher learning, you must be prepared to pass the Psychological Counselor Education Requirements, otherwise known as the PSEC or PSEN.
The first requirement is that you must have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from an accredited institution of higher learning. The first Bachelor's degree in psychology was established in 1977 and is accredited by the American Psychological Association. It takes four years to complete the Bachelors Degree in Psychology, and a minimum of two years are required to complete the program.
Once you have earned your Bachelor's degree, you will have to take a comprehensive exam. The exam, which is also called the PEC or PSEN, is given by the Council on Accrediting Accreditation (COA). The exam consists of two parts. The first part is a written test and the second part is a clinical examination that must be administered by an authorized psychologist.
Because the exam consists of both written and clinical examinations, it can be very overwhelming to some people when they have to sit down and take all of those tests. There are some resources available online for people who wish to take the exam in a more hands-on environment, such as the PEC website. There are also websites that offer test preparation software, such as those that are available online.
Once you have passed the Psychological Counselor Education Requirements, you will be able to apply to your state's Board of Psychology Examiners. After you have been accepted into the state board, you will need to pass a written exam, and then sit for a clinical examination.
After you have met all of the requirements and have passed all three exams, you will have completed the psychologist education requirements to become a psychologist. You will now be able to practice in an approved facility and practice before being allowed to take the certification exam. Once you have passed the certification exam, you will have the official designation of Certified Psychology Licensed Practitioner (CPHP).
Your psychologist education requirements are not complete if you want to become a psychologist without having the formal training in psychology. This is known as advanced training and is often times offered by universities.
If you do not have the training or education, you will have to take a clinical examination and complete the training course that the university offers. This is very similar to a Master's degree program and consists of both written and clinical courses. The courses usually take about three years and then you will have the clinical portion of the study.
If you want to complete the advanced training in psychology and do not want to go through the entire process, you may want to look into online training. Online programs are becoming quite popular because they are less expensive than attending a school. You can complete your studies in between jobs and have a better understanding of the field of psychology and its practices.
Because of the cost of these online programs, some psychologists are hesitant to take them. However, you should consider that most will provide you with the same or better quality of education and information if you pay for their services. Even if you choose to use a local college for online study, you will still be able to get the same or better quality of education at a cheaper rate.
If you decide to take psychology online programs, there are a few things you should keep . . . . . . in mind. The first is that these programs will only teach you the core knowledge that you need to pass your written and clinical examination.
You will not learn everything about this field that is necessary to become a certified psychologist or to be certified for advanced training. You will learn about the theories of psychology, which are the concepts that underlie all of psychology. This means that you will be learning about behavior, learning about cognitive processes, and learning about human behavior in general.
