An Educational Psychology Doctorate is a professional level education in psychology that is required by most colleges and universities to obtain a PhD in education. An Educational Psychology Doctorate program will require you to do your Master's degree or Doctorate before you can actually apply for this degree level.
Most schools that offer a Master's program will give you an ED Psyc certificate after completion of the curriculum requirements, so be sure to check with your schools if they have these certificates available as well. A few schools may not offer the certification, which is OK, but if you are already working and want to go back to school to earn your PhD in education, then you need to get certified first. The two certifications that are most often accepted by schools are the PhD in Education (EdPsyc) and the ED Psyc/education Specialist (PsycEDS).
The PhD in Education (EdPsyc) allows the student to conduct research, write papers and deliver presentations. These are the requirements for a Doctorate of Education.
The Ed Psyc/education Specialist (PsycEDS) gives you the necessary education to teach at either an undergraduate or graduate level in psychology. This is also known as a teaching certification. There are some colleges that will offer this certificate and if yours doesn't, you should look into getting it anyway since it will help you get hired in schools that need more qualified psychologists.
The Ed Psyc/education Specialist Certificate is not the same as the ed psych, but the two are similar in purpose and are both acceptable degrees to have for a Masters in education. A Master's in education is a two-year program that involves an academic study on education. This requires students to have a good background in mathematics and science. It is not always required for a Doctorate, but it will increase your chances in the field.
As mentioned earlier, the Ed Psyc is the one that is usually accepted. For some reason, it is considered more credible, but it is up to you to find out for yourself. Take the time to look into each option to find the right degree for your needs.
If you choose the Ed Psyc, you can expect to study psychology at the graduate level. It may be easier for you to work at a university since you will be working with many students at once. There will be less supervision and a larger staff.
However, if you are not willing to work as much as the ed psych, there are other programs available . . . . . . as well. You could be able to earn your Psyc in education from a smaller college or through distance learning and take advantage of their convenience.
In any case, you can be assured that you will not be shortchanged by the Ed Psyc. if you are looking for a great education in psychology.
