United States Army Corp of Engineers is a civil engineering formation of the U.S. Army that primarily has three mission areas: civil construction, engineer division, and military engineering. Its main role in the defense industry is to support warfighter operations by developing solutions and products that will make our nation and our soldiers safer, more secure, and more efficient. The Corps is also responsible for managing the Corps' budget, ensuring that it remains focused on the most critical needs and provides the best possible support to our nation's military, civil, and civilian communities. They are not only required by law to have engineers, but they also are required to conduct research, conduct assessments, provide technical assistance and collaborate with other agencies.
The primary function of the USACE is to prepare the design for the construction of bridges, dams, tunnels, aqueducts, water supply systems, airports, and other transportation means. Their job is to develop and manage projects that are designed to provide essential facilities in an area or protect a critical infrastructure from being damaged by natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or sabotage. This includes both the construction of new facilities, like dams, tunnels, levees, and flood barriers, and the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure after it is damaged due to natural or manmade causes.
Civil engineering jobs within the USACE allow engineers to make major structural and building changes without destroying homes or disrupting local traffic. They use many techniques and technologies, which range from advanced computer modeling to traditional engineering methods, to make their buildings safe and reliable. Their primary focus is on improving safety for all involved, including those who live nearby the construction sites. They may work on structures such as dams, bridges, dams, retaining walls, aqueducts, septic tanks, and industrial buildings.
The Engineer Division is the smallest of all the divisions of the USACE. These engineers are employed primarily to study the natural environment and how it can be improved through engineering practices, such as flood control, stream flow and water management, soil erosion, and snow load management. They also work with natural resources and the environment to determine how they can be used for beneficial purposes, such as erosion control. and resource conservation.
The civil engineering career field is very diverse, but the job outlook for this profession is excellent. With the advancements made in computer technology, this field is no longer limited to large scale or highly complex construction projects. The job market for civil engineers now includes private homeowners, municipal governments, private contractors, construction firms, and . . . . . . environmental organizations, and even commercial real estate developers and builders.
The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is also a member of the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) and is mandated by law to carry a Disaster Risk Management Plan (DRMP). This plan includes a wide range of disaster preparedness activities to help local and state officials, as well as the public, respond to emergency situations, such as flooding, earthquake, storm, fire, and power failure.
